Since the pandemic slowed down our lives, we have been trying to be inventive and think out of the box when it comes to making money. As an artist, whether local or international, your art definitely doesn’t stop at the studio.
Here are some of the ways artists can earn more money from their skills.
- Performances: This has been put to a halt, especially in Kenya where places of entertainment have been closed. However, tours and club appearances or even concerts a great way for musicians to make money mostly with bigger labels.
- Synchronization: This is where an artist, who is the copyright holder, gives license to a film or tv show to use their songs in movies, etc
- Teaching: An artist can hold classes where they teach others their skill at a fee. Technology has made this to be much easier where there are platforms like Fiverr with such services.
- Song Writing: Writing music for others, putting in background vocals can be a source of income for musicians.
- Monetization: Platforms like Youtube gives the artist an option to make money off of their channel.
- Merchandise: We have seen many artists come up with items that represent their brand. An artist can produce branded clothing and sell it.
- Influencer Work: This has quite a footing especially when the artist has a huge following and engagement on Social Media. They can use their platform to market for different brands at a rate.
- Scoring: This involves writing a script from scratch. An artist can make money by writing musicals, etc.
- Royalties: Music royalties are payments made to rights holders (songwriters, composers, recording artists, and their representatives) in exchange for the licensed use of their music. Institutions that use the music pay these royalties from TV channels, radio stations, and venues to streaming platforms and beyond.
